The Party Continues... on the Pony Express!

Hello, hello, helloooooooo! Back again, with another birthday card as threatened, er, promised. This one was created for my friend's grandson who is turning 1 this month. I know the card is more for his mama than for him, but I kept it cute, colorful and simple anyway. After all, it will end up smooshed in a baby book or a box of mementos, right? LOL

I had fun coloring up this Party Pony image from Whipper Snapper Designs, by the same artist who created last week's Party Kitties...

Isn't he just the sweetest? =)

I colored him with my Copics, adding shimmer, shine and sparkle details with Glaze pens (hat, pressie and saddle), Stardust Stickles (hat pom) and clear Wink of Stella (saddle, pressie and sweet little posies).  The clouds, most of which got cut off/out of the image when I die cut it, were made with a combination of colorless blender, C0, and a bit of a white Souffle pen, so they have just a little texture and rise off the image.

I used a combination of dies - Spellbinders scalloped and standard circles and MFT Blueprints 15.. My papers are from the new Hip Hip Hooray pad from Doodlebug. I foresee an addiction to Doodlebug pads coming my way shortly! =D  My sentiment is from Simon Says Stamp's Handwritten Borders. I admit I held my breath while I stamped it! Thank goodness my stamping skills have improved. =)   I popped up my image for just a teensy bit of dimension (considering its future storage haha), and added a few epoxy stickers here and there. The final touch was the number 1 from the MFT die set By The Numbers. Cut from the same paper as the scalloped circle, it was coated in clear Wink of Stella and smothered in Glossy Accents. All I can say is "oooooooooh, shiiiiiiny!" ;)

I was going to duplicate the layout of the front on the inside of the card, but... ok, I'll be honest. I would have had to cut into the second sheets of these papers and I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Yes, thank you, I AM scheduled for my first Paper Hoarders Anonymous meeting next week.

So to avoid the dreaded second sheets, I used MFT's Fishtail Flag Stax and the remaining strips, and I sacrificed a different orange sheet in the pad for the scalloped circle.

A few more epoxy dots here and there and done!

These Kitties Are Ready to Party!

Greetings, fellow crafty folks!

Just stopping in to show you another birthday card, this one full of the cutest darn kitties you've ever seen... who are TOTALLY ready to PARTY!!! =)  LOL

This is the Party Kitties stamp from Whipper Snapper Designs, and one from my favorite of their artists. I broke out the Copics and actually enjoyed coming up with different ways to color each of them and keep it visually interesting... although I might try doing this image in all black/white/gray cats sometime. After I did a test run for color, I stamped the image three times so I could fussy cut and layer them up....

For a bit of interest, I used Glaze pens to color in their noses and hats.  It's hard to see on the photos, but there's a lovely sheen on their noses as I used a thin coat of clear over Copics.  I used the colored Glaze pens on their festive hats and gave them a thicker coat for real shine and added a bit of Stardust Stickles (I should start buying it in bulk lots haha) on the pompoms for sparkle. So fun! =)  On the background I added some dots with a Viva Decor pearl pen.   

I trimmed up the image with a Spellbinders Reverse Wonky Rectangle die and layered on my kitties before adhering the panel to a cute striped paper from a Glitz Color Me Happy paper pack which is nearly 2 years old, but still available. I love the current rainbow phenomenon going on and since I was away from crafting, I'm just getting into the whole chevron thing... but since I'm no trendy crafter, who cares?! =)  LOL

I added a bit of Doodlebug twine in Ladybug red and Stickled the heck out of that bow. For the inside, I added the leftover snipped from the striped paper. I created and printed my sentiment from Word and cut with the same Spellbinders die and running a Copics marker around the embossed edge, followed by a coat of Wink of Stella. Simple, but purrrfect. haha =)

The birthday girl is a cat lover, so I'm sure this one will go over well. I certainly had a good time creating it! =)

Sweetly Shaking It Up on Your Birthday!

November is turning in to a challenging month to get back into the swing of crafting regularly... I've got six birthday cards to make for coworkers and friends this month!

So I'm back again (I know, twice on the same day! haha), this time with a birthday card that I had lots of fun creating! I love the recent wave of shaker cards so I decided to create one of my own for a coworker's birthday card this week featuring a Birdie Brown stamp from My Favorite Things:

Looking at it on this screen, the colors are kind of blah.  Here's another photo with more accurate color...

Aahhh, much better. Anyway, bad pics aside, This one is going to be one of my all-time favorites I think. I love the colors of this DCWV paper from their old Celebrations stack. And I really like my coloring on the image on this one. I have finally started to convince my inner cheapskate that the only way I am going to get good at coloring is to practice, even if it's "wasting" supplies. LOL  Another thing I will have to remember is that I have to recreate my light tent and take proper photos. =\

I used two sizes of a Spellbinders die to cut my window and a piece of acetate from some Spellbinders packaging. My image is part of this lovely Birdie Brown Sweet Birthday wishes stamp set. I absolutely loved coloring her - the hair turned out exactly as I wanted and that skirt... I actually managed to get a hint of the ruffles in her skirt. Yay!  I wanted to add white polkadots, but the white Signo pen I bought two years ago has thoroughly dried up, so I went for black, using a Glaze pen. I also used purple Wink of Stella on the bottom ruffle of her skirt and a mix of clear and purple on her dress and hair bows. I gave her patent leather shoes with the Glaze pen, too. I know, no self respecting girl wears a skirt and patent leather shoes together, but since she's a drawing, I figure no boys will be able to see any reflection up her skirt. LOL    Last, I glittered the top of her cupcake with my favorite Stardust Stickles. The color is off on these pictures as well, but they show you the shine and glitter. =)

For my shaker, I used the image of the cupcakes on a tiered stand that is included in the set. I colored up the top two tiers where the cupcakes didn't overlap each other with Copics to match the colors in the DCWV banners cardstock and cut them out before coating their icing in Stardust Stickles.  I used two layers of foam adhesive to make a pocket and threw in some purple and lime sequins and pink and blue glitter (all from Doodlebug Designs and with fun names like limeade, bubblegum and swimming pool) together with the cupcakes. Then I sat here at my crafting table and played with it for the next 15 minutes. =)

To finish off the front of the card, I used a Copic marker to get the right shade of purple on my little sentiment flag and heat embossed a sentiment from the stamp set in white.

For the inside of the card I used the leftover scalloped die cuts, a few more sequins and a larger cupcake and sentiment from the stamp set. Simple, but oh so cute!

This one was so fun, I may find myself making more shaker cards soon. I do know I had a hard time giving this particular card away. Do you ever have that problem?  Make a card you absolutely love and then have to send it on to another home? LOL  I suppose I'd be surrounded by cards eventually and have no room to make any more, so better to have crafted and given away then never to be able to craft at all. hee hee

Party Time with Mo Manning

Hey! Back with my first Copics card in ages. Like, seriously, ages... 16 months, maybe?

When one of my coworkers saw the Doctors Day cards and especially the PowerPoint I had projecting on the wall (see my last post), she asked if I could make her daughter a birthday card using the same colors. Her daughter's on the school band and plays the saxophone, so she wanted anything with music. I had the perfect image in mind...

The image is So Jazzed by Mo Manning. I still had bits of cardstock and the watercolored paper I'd made for the Doctors Day cards, so I pulled this together. She only gave me a night's notice, and I ran out of time, so I had to assemble everything quickly at home and finish coloring the image at work during my lunch. I have never glued together a card before finishing the image, and I think I held my breath the larger part of lunch. I still went a bit out of the lines, but I was rather pleased by the end. Especially since it's been so long since I colored. I did well capturing the red shade of her daughter's hair too!  The photo is, unfortunately, another on the fly by cellphone; the richness of the colors in the real-life card is really pretty. I added some Stardust Stickles to the heart on her coat and swirls on her skirt and a teeny dot on the heart attached to the dog's collar. Some Golden Rod Stickles made the sax super sparkly.

As the image is the focus and I didn't want to detract from the watercolored background, I stayed really CAS with this one. I didn't have a piece of the purple cardstock big enough to back my image, so I used two pieces that didn't quite come together so I hid the seams with the little gem up top and a purple heart coated in glossy accents on the bottom. The sentiment is a Paper Smooches sentiment from the Birthday Sampler embossed in white and I used a Happy Birthday from the same set inside along with a strip of the watercolor (no pic, sorry).

PCJ-Papelitos Stamp Collab Challenge: Birthdays... and Purple Hair

Greetings, my bloggy and so-super-crafty friends!

The DT at Paper-Crafting Journey was worried that the uber-prolific crafters among you might get a little bored waiting around for our current Anything Goes challenge (running until September 12) to end, so our fearless leader Wendy arranged for a special two-week collaboration challenge with Papelitos Stamps' Challenge blog to keep you busy! OK, just kidding... well, about the DT being worried. The rest? Too true! Our theme for the special challenge is Birthday/Celebrations and you can read up on all the details here at Paper-Crafting Journey. As a twist due to the collaboration, you have to enter your card at both the PCJ and Papelitos Stamps Challenge blogs, but a double chance to win some great Papelitos images is worth a few extra moments to link up to both blogs, dontcha think? =)

For my card, I chose the image Lilian because as soon as I saw her, I saw her hair in all sorts of colors. I have been itching to try out funky hair colors and I actually think I did a better job with these purple Copics colors than I have with the more traditional blondes, brunettes and blacks. Here... judge for yourself:

I had a problem getting a good photo (migraine on Sunday left my vision a bit wacky) but I love the in-real-life colors... these BV and B Copics are some of the new Copics I picked up several weeks ago during a big sale ($4.49 and free shipping is definitely my kind of sale) and I am enjoying experimenting with new colors! =) I also added something else new... Viva Decor pen pearl dots around my image. I think I went a little overboard, but will be experimenting with those again, too! =)

I didn't quite get the effect I was going for on her face --- I should have studied Lisa's cards for nose shadows LOL --- but I think I got the feminine (if not traditional) look I wanted. I love these K&Co papers too. But why do they always make such great papers double-sided?! So hard to cut into them and "waste" one paper to use the other! LOL I added some Wild Orchid Crafts flowers in various colors I pulled from the K&Co papers. I accidentally glued down one of the smaller roses in the wrong place and couldn't get it off without ripping the papers, so I don't have the straighter vertical line I had in mind, but I love how the flowers pull all the colors together. I have been a little anti-sentiment lately, so I saved the "Happy Birthday" for the inside of my card. Which, now that I realize, I never photographed... so you'll have to imagine it. LOL

For the Girls @ SAS4K: A Sassy Cheryl Sweet Birthday

Happy Saturday, my bloggy friends!

Thank you for the sweet words about Spencer. I'm getting adjusted to him being gone, although every so often I think I hear him meowing to come in before I realize it can't possibly be. My older dog 'Liss has taken Spencer's old space in the craft room... lying over one of my feet. A 12-pound cat was one thing; the 70-pound dog is another. LOL For the most part, I'm just imagining that if there's a kitty afterlife, he is busy enjoying stalking through the grass after the most delicious bunnies ever in between afternoon snoozes spent curled up in a warm patch of sunshine, and there is probably a loving caretaker there somewhere to give him a good cuddle, a belly rub and scratch around the ears when he wants it. 

So it's time again for another challenge at Send A Smile 4 Kids... this time it's FOR THE GIRLS! and sponsored by  Mayzy Art (8 digis of the winner's choice... wow, 8!), Sassy Cheryl ($5 gift certificate) and SCACD (gift certificate).  Time to get all girly... whether that means pink and frilly or princess goth or sporty tomboy to you... any child- or teen-friendly card for a girl!

One of the delightful images the DT received to play with was this cutie from Sassy Cheryl, Sassy Sally's Big Cupcake and I took the most obvious route of a Sweet Birthday card  =)

I wanted to go colorful, and I knew exactly what set of papers I wanted to use - Summertime Designs Sweet Cakes kit by Summer Driggs.

Sooooooo yummy! I've used this set to make a number of birthday and party banners as it's so colorful and fun - it looks like a sweet celebration!

I colored my image with Copics, giving her an extra rosy cheek. I mean, hey, a cupcake that size? She's obviously flushed with utter excitement... or the anticipation of the biggest sugar rush EVER! LOL I added a nice coating of Frosted Lace Stickles with a touch of Distress Stickles in Tumbled Glass over the blue shadows in the cupcake icing and topped it with a frosted cherry red gem. I used Copics to make the perfect shades of cardstock layers and ran a pink Copic along the edge of my sentiment, which was printed up from Word. With so much color and pattern, I just added a few red holographic glitter dots to the corners for a little extra sparkle.

I worked with a Mayzy image too, but my camera and I are having a serious disagreement over what my card should look like in a photo, so I'll be posting that later once I convince my camera that if it wants to stay in one piece, it will see things my way. >=[

SAS4K DT Card: Birthday Fun - A Groovy Flower Power Birthday!

Good morning, my crafty friends (and Mom & Ken! LOL)...

First, a whine about Blogger. Apparently Blogger can't decide how many blogs I'm actually following. Over the past week the number has grown to the accurate 200+ and shrunk by 30. I'm missing fun crafty posts and it's making me a bit cranky! So if I haven't been to visit lately, it's because Blogger and Google Reader have been hiding you from me! Either that or they are developing software alzheimers. =[ Sigh. Anyway, hope to catch up with all my MIA bloggy friends soon!

Now.... on to the FUN!  Time again for a fantastic challenge to Send A Smile 4 Kids...  Birthday Fun! As usual we have some terrific sponsors who are offering up prizes for some randomly chosen winners:

Tickled Pink also generously provided my teamies and I images to play with! There were lots of birthday images with presents and balloons and such, but 60s Willow caught my eye as I was browsing through the website and I inspired to create something with some girly Flower Power:

Although I kept the embellies a bit simpler as I do on my kids cards, I love how this one turned out. My pictures are a bit better but yes, Ken, I do need to figure out my lighting and build a little box out of white poster board. Plus I haven't had time to figure out how to knock the camera off the autoISO setting so I can play with it a bit. (Having a photographer in the family can make photo-taking quite intimidating hahaha)

I colored Willow with  combination of Copics and ProMarkers (for the pink top). I had a problem with a bit of bleeding this time because of my depth perception issues and that the details and lines of this image are so tiny. It felt like I was trying to park a jumbo jet in a mini Cooper-sized parking space. LOL From a normal distance it looks good, so imagine my embarrassment when my closeups revealed all my flaws! LOL But it's ok... I wasn't planning on going pro anytime soon. ;)

My floral paper is from a Provocraft Spring stack, with dark purple and green cardstock to set it off from my card base, which was a super light purple that I have inked to death with Dusty Concord Distress Ink. I can't remember which number it is, but I used a Nestabilities die in two sizes for the center panels, then cut dark purple squares to layer them. I ended up rounding off the corners of the purple cardstock as the pointy corners seemed, well... too pointy. LOL

I used a scrap of tie-dye glitter cardstock to create a couple of flowers with my C.C. Designs Five Point Flowers die. Unfortunately the bigger flower fell on the floor and was taste-tested by my lab, Zoe, but it recovered nicely. LOL I added pearls to the centers and popped them up on foam dots.

My sentiment was made on the computer with a font called Bell Bottoms and I used a thinner foam to give that some dimension, too. (I will leave it to my *ahem* older brother to let me if "groovy" was actually in use in the late 60s. hee hee)  My ribbons are Berwick-Offray... a white sheer and a light lavendar rickrack.

I used Distress Stickles in Spun Sugar and Milled Lavender on the flowers on the jeans. The look I wanted is the color of painted jeans and the Distress Stickles worked perfectly for what I wanted. I used a little bit of Yellow regular Stickles and used Stardust Stickles on the little flowers on the jeans and a few of the flowers in her hair. A few little Liquid Pearl dots were added to the jeans, too.

My final touches were these silvery Robin's Nest tear drops that remind me of the little silver studs on jean designs and a few pearls scattered about around the sentiment. Voila! =)

SAS4K DT Card: Bright Colors - Gerry Giraffe has a birthday!

Good morning! It's time again for another challenge at Send A Smile 4 Kids and this challenge is another fun one.... BRIGHT COLORS FOR KIDS!

Isn't he the sweetest giraffe? I also picked a pack of presents from this Birthday Party set that includes a cake image that I didn't use on my card.

My photos today are a bit of a problem, at least for me. The colors on my card are actually much deeper and richer on the original. More of a purple and burgundy than the blue and pink that they are in the photos. Unfortunately a combination of a new lamps and - the horror - a failing camera. The LED screen has died completely and my poor, overworked 9-year-old camera is dying. Sob.

But Monday is my birthday and my Mom and I are going on a day-long adventure so I will be camera shopping for sure! With the joint issues followed by hip surgery then one knee and finally the other knee, it's been a long, long time since Mom and I ran away together, so I took the day off from work, had the pager access turned off yesterday before I left and solemnly vow not to look at my work email until Tuesday morning when I get back to work. LOL

Anyway... back to my party boy Gerry. I colored him up with Copics and knew I wanted to use this old ProvoCraft balloon paper I used for my Dragon birthday card for an earlier SAS4K challenge this year. I fussed about forEVER trying to work in a shape or some kind of solid background so Gerry would be sure to stand out, but nothing seemed to work. I finally decided that if I placed the right colors behind him, a ribbon and some foam dots might do the trick just as well and I'm glad I didn't try to force in anything else.

I colored my images with a combination of Copics and ProMarkers. Instead of trimming all the way 'round Gerry I gave him a little bit of ground to sit on at the bottom and I like how it turned out. =) I glittered up different elements of the presents and Gerry's bowtie and the little poof at the top of his party hat. What's a birthday card without some glitter? LOL

I layered a sheer white ribbon that glistens and two thin grosgrain ribbons and popped up both Gerry and his presents over that. I added a bow made of the same sheer white and glued on a royal blue confetti Happy Birthday over the knot.  I added a purple cardstock behind my balloon paper (yes, I know it looks blue. Poor dying camera.) and then liberally sprinkled the edges with these cool glittered epoxy stickers from EK Success. The whole kit and kaboodle was then glued on to a textured white cardstock base.

SAS4K DT Card: Anything Goes for Kids - Sweet Spring Birthday Girl

Happy Saturday to you, my crafty friends!

I cannot tell you how glad I am to have survived to the weekend. Too bad it's only two days before it's back to the trenches. There has been so much going on at work lately that my boss is getting stressed out not having enough time to feel like he is on top of everything. Late yesterday I managed to capture him for enough time to plot out the next two weeks' schedule so I can cancel meetings and reschedule service so he has some time to work on the projects. Hopefully next week we'll be surfing the wave instead of being tumbled under it as it crashes into shore. LOL

Earlier this week I finished a card that I thought would be for today's post... and realized I'd used the wrong images! Apparently my boss's mental disorganization this week was catching. LOL So I got my hands on the really sweet images from Sylvia Zet's Wee Stamps, one of our two generous sponsors for our Send A Smile 4 Kids challenge... (it's an easy one!)... ANYTHING GOES! Yep, whip up any kind of card for a kid and you can enter it as the SAS4K challenge from now until June 1st! Isn't she totally sweet? I love Sylvia Zet's images, but the hair has always put me off. LOL There are stamp images like Wee Stamps, Mo Manning and Make It Crafty that I love, but that I just haven't felt ready to tackle yet. My coloring is getting better and I'm hoping to have some time to practice lots and lots this summer when I can be outside while the pups play, the kitty lounges in the sun and I can color while ignoring the growing grass and the weedy edge of the backyard. LOL Since I was a bit hurried this time, I'm not altogether happy with her hair, but she'll do. And that face is so sweet, it distracts you from her hair. LOL

I colored her with a combination of Copics and ProMarkers. I tried my hand at one of my favorite Coops Tricks... shading darker on one side of the image and barely or not at all on the other side to get some depth. It lightened up a bit on my photo, so she doesn't quite pop off the page, but I like the effect and it does look better on the actual card, so I'll be practicing and borrowing that technique again. (thanks, Coops!)

I used Liquid Pearls to color the flowers in her basket. I got a little carried away and the white center dots spread a bit more than I would have liked, but I love the colors and the bit of shine.

I even did a BOW on this card, can you believe it? I used a pale greenish-yellow ribbon on my card and paired it with a Martha Stewart border punch... I can't remember its name right now, but I love the art deco shell design. A little elegance.

The papers are from the Spring Fling DCWV line... I picked up the 180-page pack of combined Spring Fling and Summer Days for less than 10 bucks. Not that I needed more papers. (Has anyone created a Paper-Addicts Anonymous group yet? I seriously need an intervention. LOL)  Paper hoarding aside, I love the rose design and found the perfect little WOC rose to match in my stash. The sentiment was done on the computer and I used one end of a Nestie Labels Eighteen to create a tag. The image panel was popped up on foam dots. (can't do a card without those!) Some Kaiser pearls, a little Distress Inking in Spun Sugar, Scattered Straw and Shabby Shutters on my edges and done!
